Eden Herschel Babbage (1844-1924) was a bank manager and bank inspector for the Bank of Australasia. He was also a keen amateur photographer. E H Babbage joined the bank in Adelaide around 1864 and worked for it in New Zealand, New South Wales and Queensland
before retiring in 1904, soon after he had settled in the Sydney suburb of Roseville. He became known as the "father of Roseville" and Babbage Road Roseville is named for him. [refs: entry for Benjamin Herschel Babbage (1815-1878) in 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'; Obituary for E H Babbage in 'Sydney Morning Herald' 6 February 1924 p.14).
The album contains many photographs of banks and bank residences as well as general street scenes taken in regional New South Wales and in central and north Queensland. No photographs in the album are dated but most appear to have been taken in the late 1880s and 1890s.
